Critique 3 - Idea Development

Thai Ranard

A lot of question pop-up in my mind when think how to do my FYP =.=

How many sound?
How many button?
How to create the button?
How to do the programming?
What program to use?
How much the budget?
Where to find the hardware and software?
What is the difficulty during execution?
What the application look like?

Those question is the problem i will face during my FYP progress. I need to make sure how many sound and button that i need to put in the application/installation. Need to do research on Ranard history. I a bit hard to do survey for Thai Ranard because most of the information is in Thai Words and i need sometime do to the translation.

There are few things that i need to do in this stage.

  • The first thing i need to figure out is doing the FTIR (frustrated total internal reflection) table .
Get inspired from this video

Precedence Studies

This is a few samples of virtual instruments. By using this application users can play piano, organ, saxophone, flute, guitar and a few more.

This is the samples of virtual piano.

"

Virtual Piano
This application can be use as a virtual piano for all you MIDI devices, such as your Sound Card or another MIDI tone generator.
Almost every MIDI parameter can be change via the user interface.
Virtual Piano is optimized for use with Yamaha Synthesizers, but should have no problem with other ones.
This project is a good start for people who want to learn more about MIDI programming under Windows."

Design Approach

The Box that use to hold the glass will be cover by cloth that have Thailand traditional art/ painting like:

Thai Ranard is a tradisional music instrument. So the design for the layout/appearance need to be unique and suit with concept (Traditional).

Critical Commentaries

Youth VS Traditional Instrument

Malaysian youth behavior toward new media instruments and old instrument.

Before we go to the main idea, let introduce some instrument that have been used in Malaysia. Those traditional instrument have different name at different country. For example Percussion
Percussion includes things that are struck, scraped, rubbed, shaken, twirled , whipped, etc. The limits to percussion are those of the human imagination. The following percussion instruments are found on this site:

Aslatua-Ghana
Balofon-West Africa
Changgo-Korea
Deerskin Drum-N.America
Kiromboi-Sarawak
Udu-Nigeria

Jaw Harps or Jews Harps

Jaw harps or jew’s harp are found in many cultures around the world, and were a popular 'personal' instrument, in that they could be carried in a pocket easily and played whenever the player has an inkling for music. Most jaw harps are very quiet instruments played alone or in duets, however some European metal jaw harps are made very loud to be played in ensembles with other instruments. Although many sources claim that the term Jews harp has no racial connotations, in certain regions it did carry racial connotations, so this site will use the term jaw harp. Included are mostly bamboo or palm leaf instruments not found elsewhere on the web, and some very rare instruments collected throughout Asia. There are two main categories to these jaw harps, those that are activated by plucking the tongue or lamella, and those that are tension harps activated by pulling a string. In many cases both of these types can be found in the same region, or within close proximity to each other. The following jaw harps are found on this site:

Ankuoc - Kampuchea
Ata - Thailand
Bungkau - Sabah
Dan Moi - Vietnam
Genggong - Bali
Gerudeng - Sarawak
Giwong- Philippines
Rangguin - Malaysia

Refer to "http://www.asza.com/ihm.shtml"

The musical instruments of peninsular Malaysia can be classified into 4 categories. Aerofons are wind instruments. Cordofons are stringed instruments which are either plucked or bowed. Idiofons are percussive instruments which are struck or shaken. Membranofons, the largest group, are the drums and get their name from the skin or membrane which is stretched over the instrument to produce its sound when struck. For example : Serunai: The end-blown pipe is ubiquitous in Asia. It is believed to have originated from Palestine in the Middle East sometime during the 2nd century. It is a double reed instrument varying in length from 12 to 18 inches, and constructed from a variety of wood such as batang lada, lemab and nangka. Its three main parts are the kepala (head), batang (stem) and pipit (mouth piece). The instrument’s body is adorned with intricate carvings and painted in red, green, gold and black.

When we talk about Traditional Instrument to the youth. The first thing that come to their mind is "Traditional Instrument is for old generation and it outdated" and don't even know the name of those traditional instrument . Youth generation have this kind of thinking is logic because they lack of experience toward traditional instrument. Some of the youth never expose to traditional music instrument.

Youth more prefer music like Hip-Hop and not traditional music that create by traditional instrument. The Europe culture already effect youths in Malaysia or another country like Thailand or Korean. In the future Traditional Music Instrument wont be able to hear by youth generation if hip-hop phenomena continues like this in our culture.

The Youth Music Box

The Youth Music Box by silentstudios

The aim of the Youth Music Box is to allow people of any musical ability to have a hands-on music making experience using cutting-edge digital equipment and, in particular, to inspire more children and young people to get involved in music-making. Inside is a musical console table that allows groups of up to four ‘players’ to create music together using cutting-edge technology interfaces linked to real instruments. They will have the choice of four instruments: two Edirol MIDI keyboards (one for vocals and the other for melody) a Roland TD-9K drumkit, and a Denon 3700S digi-media turntable, which will create and record the track. Players have a choice of six musical styles: reggae, drum and bass, urban, afro beat, classical and disco/electro. After selecting a sample track to keep the beat and play along to, there will be a chance to rehearse before the final recording. Behind the scenes, two technicians in the control room will deploy professional video mixing facilities from Edirol and digital audio controls in the shape of the RSS V-Mixing system. Inside the Box there are remotely-operated cameras built in, ready to film the creative process. Edirol’s V-8 vision mixer will be used to combine these camera feeds with graphics to create a finished video recording. "pixelsumo"

Evoke

Evoke is a specially commissioned project for Illuminating York 2007 in northern England.
Evoke is a massive animated projection that lights up the facade of York Minster in response to the public, who use their own voices to "evoke" colourful light patterns that emerge at the building's foundations and soar up towards the sky, giving the surface a magical feeling as it melts with colour.

The patterns of Evoke are generated in realtime by the words, sounds, music and noises produced collectively by the public, determined by their particular voice characteristics. The colors will skim the surface of the room.

Problem:

  • Cost
  • Technical Setup

Aim & Objectives:

  • The evoke concept will be modified to fit it in a room /smaller space.
  • To make a mini version of Evoke.
  • To create a fantastic visual and give user new experience

Concept:

  • Colorful and Fantastic Visual

Scrapple

Scrapple (2005: Golan Levin) is an audiovisual installation in which everyday objects placed on a table are interpreted as sound-producing marks in an “active score.”

The Scrapple system scans a table surface as if it were a kind of music notation, producing music in real-time from any objects lying there. The installation makes use of a variety of playful forms; in particular, long flexible curves allow for the creation of variable melodies, while an assemblage of cloth shapes, small objects and wind-up toys yields ever-changing rhythms. Video projections on the Scrapple table transform the surface into a simple augmented reality, in which the objects placed by users are elaborated through luminous and explanatory graphics. The 3-meter long table produces a 4-second audio loop, allowing participants to experiment freely with tangible, interactive audiovisual composition. In the Scrapple installation, the table is the score.

Scrapple was created with support from the artist residency program of the Ars Electronica Futurelab. The Scrapple performance has been presented at the following venues, among others: Below are a few performance that have been done.

  • Bios, Athens, Greece. 9/2006.
  • Ars Electronica Festival, Linz, Austria. 9/2006.
  • PlayVision, World Financial Center Arts & Events Series, NYC, 5/2006.
  • OFFF Festival, Barcelona, Spain. 5/2006.
  • 49th San Francisco International Film Festival, 4/2006.
  • Signal Operators, University of Houston, Texas. 4/2006.
  • Tokyo Digital Arts Festival, Tokyo, Japan. 12/2005.
  • RomaEuropa Festival, Rome, Italy. 11/2005.
  • Ultrasound Festival, Huddersfield, UK. 11/2005.
  • Monkeytown, Brooklyn, NYC. 11/2005.

Press images of Scrapple performances are available in the following Flickr photosets:
Ultrasound Festival, 2005 (with Sue Costabile)
RomaEuropa Festival, 2005 (with Sue Costabile)
Tokyo Digital Arts Festival, 2005 (with Greg Shakar)

The installation that i gonna setup is inspired by Scrapple. The installation is combination of few instrument like piano, guitar, drum and some sound effect. The main purpose of this installation is for users to compose a nice music.

The installation can be join by few people, it up to 5 people.
